About Łuwechōn Kots’ede’i Kime

Łuwechōn Kots’ede’i Kime (formerly Klappan Independent School) is a welcoming and student-focused learning environment located in Iskut, BC, on the traditional territory of the Tahltan Nation. Grounded in the culture and values of the Tahltan Nation, our school offers a rewarding opportunity to join a small, dedicated team where teachers work closely with students in classrooms of around nine, each supported by a full-time Education Assistant. About the Opportunity

Łuwechōn Kots’ede’i Kime is looking for a full-time Principal to join our team in Iskut, BC.

Reporting to the Iskut Band Council Education Manager and working closely with the First Nations Schools Authority (FNSA) and First Nations Education Steering Committee (FNESC), you will provide educational leadership across the school while fostering a healing-centred, culturally grounded learning environment rooted in Tahltan values and the First Peoples Principles of Learning.

In this position, you will be primarily responsible for leading all aspects of school operations, supporting student success and staff development, strengthening community relationships, and ensuring the integration of culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and land-based learning throughout the school.

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Providing strategic leadership that fosters a safe, inclusive, healing-centred, and culturally grounded school community
  • Coaching, mentoring, evaluating, and supporting teachers and support staff while leading recruitment, onboarding, professional development, and staff retention initiatives
  • Overseeing the implementation of the BC K-12 curriculum while embedding Tahltan culture, language, and the First Peoples Principles of Learning throughout educational programming
  • Building strong, collaborative relationships with students, families, Elders, Knowledge
  • Keepers, the Iskut Band Council, FNSA, FNESC, and other community partners
  • Leading trauma-informed, restorative, and student-centred practices that support student wellbeing, inclusion, and positive learning outcomes
  • Supporting and expanding on-the-land and culturally responsive learning opportunities that connect students with Tahltan territory, traditions, and ways of knowing
  • Managing school operations, including budgeting, grants, staffing, enrolment, scheduling, facilities, student records, reporting, and regulatory compliance
  • Representing the school with professionalism while championing continuous improvement, reflective practice, and the long-term vision of Łuwechōn Kots’ede’i Kime

About You

To qualify, you will bring 5+ years of successful experience in K-12 education, including leadership or administrative experience within an educational environment. Administrative certification or a relevant Master's degree is preferred, although an equivalent combination of education and extensive administrative experience will also be considered.

A valid teaching certification in good standing with the BC Teacher Regulation Branch (TRB) or another Canadian province or territory will be considered a strong asset.

The following are required:

  • Ability to undergo a criminal record and vulnerable sector check
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Willingness to relocate to Iskut, BC, and live in a remote community

Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:

  • Experience leading or supporting school administration, instructional leadership, or educational teams
  • Strong understanding of the BC K-12 curriculum and effective instructional practices
  • Experience working in or alongside First Nations or Indigenous communities
  • Knowledge of culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and restorative educational practices
  • Experience coaching, mentoring, and supporting the professional growth of educators
  • Strong relationship-building skills with students, families, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community partners
  • Experience overseeing school operations, including budgeting, staffing, reporting, and grant administration
  • Familiarity with the First Peoples Principles of Learning and land-based education
